My name is Hebbler.
I’m 12 years old.
Our family rules are relatively simple to follow:
— Don’t forget to knock on the door.
— Don't leave food on your plate.
— Take good care of Anton.
— Be kind.
Mom thinks we're short on money and she's been acting strange lately. When night falls, she says she forgot her wallet at work, so then we have to walk until we pass a few streetlights. When we get home...
Anton greets us by wagging his tail and wiping his drool on Mom's skirt. Very angry, she goes to change. Anton and I take advantage of this moment to raid the tuppers mum keeps on the highest shelf. Honey, smoothies, strawberries with cream, chicken. She's stingy with the delicious things, that's why we always have to steal the food.
— Just once in your life, steal the carrots on the second shelf of the fridge.
Anton and I froze instantly. Today we had been stealthy enough to avoid the invisible ninjas we never see but who always steal before us.
What I love about Fridays is that mom plays a blind eye and dad comes home early.
Today was different.
Mom checked her phone and cried, clenching her teeth; it scared me to see her cry because she never does. When I approached her, her expression changed completely.
— Did you finish the chicken? You know I hate cooking chicken!
Maybe she was too upset that we stole all the chicken, considering how annoying it is for her to cook and eat it on her diet. I felt bad, but I couldn't let Anton take all the blame, since he is my best friend, and things would surely go worse for him than for me.
— I was very hungry mom, I'm so sorry.
— Look at my skirt! It's your fault I can't buy myself anything new, because I'm your mother and I must always look out for you first!
A knot got stuck in my throat. Is it an adult thing to get this angry over a chicken? I felt sorry for my mom, and even though my heart was squeezing from all the ugly things she said to me, I listened to her patiently until her anger subsided.
This episode was the longest one yet. When it was over, she took me to my room, tucked me in, and apologized. She is very kind because whenever she says hurtful things to me, she asks for forgiveness.
I wish Dad could hear her, but I'm afraid he'll abandon us after mom yells such terrible things at him as she does to me. Even though I don't know him well, he must be a good man if he married Mom.
That night, mom's sobs broke the silence that predominates every night.
Later, a shrill noise woke me up.
Even though I called for my mom, no one was home. I went out. I ran down the stairs that connect the whole neighborhood to the bottom of the ravine where grandmother's house is. All the neighbors were gathered around.
— What a horror. Good god.
— Doña Acacia says Marisela's daughter got close to the fence and fell into the ravine's canal.
— Poor creature, what a pity!
— Yes, plus there was no family member who could help her except for a pitbull that threw itself into the ravine with her.
— Help her? A dog? Those kinds of dogs are fighting dogs, and therefore, incapable of helping anyone.
— No, doña Hermelinda. That dog is special because Braulio's daughter took care of it with a lot of affection, and they say the gentleman's little brother removed its fangs so it wouldn't bite the girl.
— Oh, then it's a pity.
The end of that sentence formed a knot in my head that went down and stuck in my throat. I wanted to ask them about Anton, but the knot in my throat dried up my words as soon as they began to form in my mouth.
I fell silent.
I ran, pushing past the women who were gathered around the entrance of the gate. There I saw my cousin lying on the grass.
She was completely asleep, and while the men insisted on burning the hair of the dogs that bit her to rub it over her wounds, the women insisted on waiting for our grandmother Rosa María, because she was a nurse and they assured she would know what to do.
I wanted to scream at them to put a rag over her.
To cover her wounds with anything because she was bleeding out.
But it seemed I was the only one who knew she was dying.
I put my hands on my neck and squeezed tightly. My face turned red and my hands white, but I felt the knot in my throat loosen.
— What are you doing, girl?!
One of the gossiping women shook me violently and I had to let go of my neck to swat at her.
— Ouch, rude girl!
Dad appeared from somewhere to restore order to the situation. He chased away the gossiping women, and those who stayed, he forced them to call an ambulance willing to walk down these stairs.
— Hebbler, where is Anton?
I didn't know what to respond; I still couldn't speak properly. Dad is always very strict about what he asks, but how can he expect me to answer right now?
I don't know.
— When I ask you a question, you must answer!
He raised his hand and I closed my eyes waiting for the blow when the neighbor's pack of dogs shattered the silence like an earthquake. Screeches, howls, and growls approached at full speed. In the center of all that chaos, Anton was biting a dog's leg while all the others were biting him.
Terror left my body in a heartbreaking scream.
— Shut up!
Dad reprimed me.
— Anton! Anton!!!—I screamed desperately. Anton turned to look at me.
Dad lifted an extremely large rock over his head, like a superhero; if it's him, he can save him. He threw the rock so hard it cut through the wind.
The stone was aimed at Anton and managed to kill some of the dogs that were biting him.
— You killed him, you killed him, you killed Anton!—Hatred and sadness took over my eyes; not even the disappointments caused by his biggest whims had taken such a place in my heart.
— Shut up already Hebbler! This wouldn't be happening if you had taken good care of him in the first place! I killed him because they were eating him alive!
Now would be the moment when mom always rescues me, but she wasn't there and no one came to my aid for this battle. To be honest, if the other adults fear my father as much as I do, I don't blame them for not coming to my rescue.
— Earlier you hit Mrs. Juana, apologize to her. I don't want to see you cry. I am the one who should be crying because I had to kill Anton because of your carelessness.
My head, my eyes, and my body hurt terribly, as if I had received the rock. Dazed, I approached Mrs. Juana.
— I'm sorry.
